WHO and WHAT were The BREAKAWAYS?

The 15 members of the group were mostly parents of past pupils of Chancellors School, Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire, who had taken part in the twice yearly PTA shows.
A group decided to get together and take some entertainment around to hospitals, OAP Homes, Nursing Homes, care groups, etc. These were The BREAKAWAYS, the group were in existence for over 22 years.

Our programme usually contained some chorus numbers (well known songs) and some solo items. There might be a tap routine, sketches and, we hope, there were  many numbers that the audience could join in and sing with us. The shows were bright, cheerful, well costumed, and we sincerely hope that we gave enjoyment. We usualy kept the shows to about an hour in length, although longer shows for special events were possible.

We made no charge but if we were given a donation we gratefully accepted it. From those funds we took out only our "costume" expenses - the rest was given to chosen charities at the beginning of each year. We have given about £16,500 to a variety of registered charities.

We came to you! Our aim was to provide an hours entertainment in residential or nursing homes to enrich the lives of the residents.

We also performed in other environments for small organisations and care groups just to give pleasure.

We have also helped others such as local Rotary & 41 Clubs, the Willow Foundation etc. to put on shows to raise money for their charities.
